Bamboo marché

In August 2021, we created a mobile pavilion using local bamboo and held a series of small street markets in Minamiashigara, Kanagawa Prefecture. The first one in the Okamoto district on the 20th, the second one in the Iwahara district on the 27th, and the last one in the Wadagahara district on the 29th, each time with the cooperation of local farmers.

The first step was to select and cut the necessary bamboo from the local mountains. Through repeated mock-ups, we came up with a proposal that takes advantage of the bamboo’s flexibility and lightness. The goal was also to make a modular and easy-to-built pavilion that can be expanded by adding units and built in few hours. In the Wadagahara district, for example, we managed to build a 9-unit pavilion by 10 people in 3 hours, with all the materials transported by 3 light trucks (or K-truck in Japanese).
