Hiyoshi Ribbon Terrace

The Hiyoshi Ribbon Terrace is a project on a sunken amphitheater with terraced seats. It is located on a building courtyard in Keio University’s Hiyoshi Campus and connects to a student cafeteria. The amphitheater was infrequently used because of its exposure to strong sunlight. We proposed temporary shading for the terrace using fabrics and two types of metal fittings to create a resting place that fosters interaction outside the classroom.

Taking advantage of the site’s shape the design resembles a maypole with ribbons hanging from the university building. The ribbon-shaped fabric creates shade for the terraced seats, and lets in the wind and skylight. The bright orange color complements the existing vegetation's green, and brings a sense of colorfulness to the courtyard surrounded by the grey concrete university buildings. By adjusting the bolts, the angle of upper metal fittings can be adjusted, and the ribbon can be removed from the lower metal fittings. The ribbons can be removed easily during long vacations or typhoons.

Construction was completed in November 2023, and by the following spring, the terrace had become a vibrant place of relaxation and recreation for many students. By proposing a detachable, easily installed shaded space capable of covering a large area, this project introduced new possibilities for utilizing outdoor spaces effectively.
